South Bend, IN (SportsNetwork. http://www.flyknittrainer.nl/zwart-rood-nike-roshe-one-print-heren-dames-loopschoenen.html .com) - A top-10 matchup is on tap at Purcell Pavilion on Wednesday evening, as the eighth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish play host to the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils in a marquee ACC showdown. Mike Krzyzewski became the first coach in Division I history to reach 1,000 career wins, as his Blue Devils came from behind to post a 77-68 victory over St. Johns on Sunday at Madison Square Garden. The historic win pushed Duke to 17-2 overall as the team jumps back into ACC action. Mike Breys Irish may be looking up at Duke in the Top-25 poll, but it is the Blue Devils (4-2) that are looking up at Notre Dame in the ACC standings. The Irish also posted a dramatic win last time out, edging out NC State in overtime on the road on Sunday, 81-78. With the win, Notre Dame moved to 19-2 overall and 7-1 in-conference, good for a second-place tie with North Carolina and trailing only No. 2 Virginia (7-0). Duke has dominated this series, winning 19 of the 22 all-time meetings. However, the Irish won the last matchup, a 79-77 victory last year at home. These two teams will meet again in less than two weeks in Durham. It wasnt easy by any stretch of the imagination, but Duke ended its game against St. Johns with a 26-7 run to come from behind and earn Coach K his 1,000th victory. Freshman Tyus Jones matched his career-high with 22 points, while fellow freshman Jahlil Okafor recorded his sixth double-double of the season, posting 17 points and 10 rebounds. Quinn Cook matched Okafors scoring output with 17 points of his own, while Amile Jefferson chipped in 11 points in the win. Duke can win games at either end of the floor, thanks to a roster chock-full of talent. The team is averaging a robust 81.6 ppg this year, while shooting .499 from the field. Okafor has been a monster inside despite his youth. The 6-11, 270-pounder leads the ACC in both scoring (18.5 ppg) and field-goal percentage (.671), while ranking third in rebounding (9.0 rpg). Cook is the teams veteran presence, as the senior guard posts 14.3 ppg and leads the team with 50 3-pointers. Jones is both a scorer (10.7 ppg) and deft distributor (5.1 apg). Yet another freshman, forward Justise Winston (10.5 ppg) gives the team more offensive power. There arent many teams in the nation that could win a shootout with Duke, but Notre Dame is one of them. The Irish are as efficient a squad as there is, shooting .521 from the floor (second nationally), leading to 81.9 ppg (ninth nationally). Four of the five starters are averaging double figures, giving the team plenty of balance at the offensive end. Guard Jerian Grant is bucking for All-America honors, as he is both a potent scorer (17.1 ppg) and tremendous facilitator (6.2 apg - 11th nationally). Pat Connaughton adds 13.9 ppg and although he isnt the biggest guy (6-5), he is among the conferences best rebounders (8.3 rpg). Zach Auguste (13.7 ppg) and Demetrius Jackson (13.4 ppg) can fill up the basket as well. The Irish overcame a 12-point halftime deficit against NC State to tie things up in regulation and then finally moved past the hometown Wolfpack and earn the win at PNC Arena. Five Notre Dame players finished in double figures in the victory, led by Grants 25 points. Jackson, Connaughton and V.J. Beachem all checked in with 11 points, while Auguste, who had missed some time due to an academic issue, recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Mats Zuccarello had no complaints when the puck found its way into the net. Zuccarello broke up a scoreless duel between two Olympic goalies with 5:58 remaining, lifting the Rangers to a 1-0 victory over the Red Wings on Thursday night. http://www.flyknittrainer.nl/ . Puig hit a three-run homer and threw out a runner at second base, leading Los Angeles over the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 Sunday. SAN DIEGO -- James Shields was on another road mound and thats a good thing for the Kansas City Royals. Then again, he really was at his home away from home. "It was nice to sleep in my own bed last night," Shields said after pitching Kansas City past the San Diego Padres 8-0 Wednesday. Shields (4-3) won at Petco Park, which isnt far from his residence in Rancho Santa Fe. "I got to play with the dog and see the kids for the first time in about a month," Shields said. "It was really nice to be around the house." Shields wasnt a welcome sight for the San Diego batters, scattering seven hits over seven innings. With Eric Hosmer driving in a season-high four runs and the Royals scoring three times in the first inning, Shields was able to win with less than his best. "I didnt think my stuff way that good today," said Shields, who threw a season-high 118 pitches. "I was all over the place, getting behind in counts a lot. It was a grind day, but sometimes you got to go out there without your good stuff and compete and that is what I did." Padres ace Andrew Cashner (2-5) didnt see the fifth inning. "Were kind of in a team-wide funk," Cashner said. The Royals are headed the opposite direction. They won their second straight game, took their first series at Petco Park and snapped a five-game losing skid since rolling into town. "That was what you call an AAGG -- an all-around good game in all phases," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "Shields was fantastic, the bullpen was great, our defence was solid and we had very, very good baserunning. And our offence had as good as a day as we have had against a darn good young pitcher in a long time." For a good stretch, Shields, who struck out four and walked two, has been tough on the road. Hes won four straight starts away from Kauffmann Stadium and since the start of last season is 14-4 with a 2.00 ERA. Hosmer got three hits. He finished the series going 7 for 15 with seven RBIs, a homer and a double. "The power numbers will come," Hosmer said. "Im not worried about that. Its early in the season and right now Im just doing anything to help this team win." "The biggest thing today was coming up with runners in scooring position and getting guys in," he said. The Padres scuffled, not having any better luck against two relievers after Shields exited. They were shut out for a major league-high sixth time this season. San Diego has lost six of eight overall. Cashner, who lasted a season-low four innings, had trouble from the start. He threw 43 pitches in the first, hurt by a pair of errors from shortstop Everth Cabrera that led to two unearned runs. "I feel bad for my teammate, for Cashner," Cabrera said. Alcides Escobar reached when Cabrera misplayed his ground ball after Nori Aoki opened with a single. Hosmer hit a two-run single, Alex Gordon reached base two batters later when Cabrera mishandled his grounder and Danny Valencia followed with a broken-bat, RBI single. Cashner ended the inning by getting Shields to ground out with the bases loaded in a nine-pitch at-bat. "That was the best AB of the game," Hosmer said. The Padres had a chance to cut into their deficit in the second when they got three hits. But Cameron Maybin was too aggressive rounding second base on an infield single, and Escobar slid in behind from shortstop, took Hosmers throw from first base and made the tag. Padres manager Bud Black requested a review, but the call stood. It marked the first time in five appeals this season that Black had lost. The Padres tied a season high with three errors, and had a passed ball and wild pitch in allowing four unearned runs.
